The government has admitted that it did not receive response from multilateral and bilateral donors like it received after the earthquake that struck the country in 2005. This was confirmed by State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sumsam Bukhari in a media briefing on flood situation in the country. He claimed that international community did not provide ample assistance to Pakistan as compared to the earthquake.
Talking about the overall death toll, he said figures reached up to 1245 and further rise is feared. According to government's initial estimate, around 14 million people were affected by the ravages of the flood. However, the actual figures would come out after relief phase would be over by the end of November, he added. "The World Bank had been asked to carry out damage assessment survey before going to international donors", the minister said. He said that exceptionally high flood in Indus was still passing through Sukkur Barrage where it maintained 1.5 million cusecs inflow.
