In order to ensure safety of district Dadu and its historic towns, the Sindh government has made a breach in the Keti Jatoi bund, leaving thousands of acres of land under flood water. Sources told Business Recorder on Saturday that as the water level was increasing at Dadu-Moro Bridge, it was feared that the floodwater could enter Dadu city and other centuries-old towns of the district.
The increasing level of floodwater could have played havoc in the Dadu district and its adjoining centuries-old towns including Patt Sharif, Piyaro Goth, Johi, Phulji, Rehmani Nagar, etc. However, the cut in Keti Jatoi Bund has ensured safety of these areas, they added.
The Keti Jatoi bund had been constructed by late Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi to save the katcha areas of district Naushehro Feroz and his farms located just next to the Bund, sources said. They said that irrigation officials along with elected representatives had talked to Jatoi brothers who reportedly allowed the Sindh government to breach the bund, if the water level increased alarmingly.
The irrigation staff, with the help of a single crane, cut the bund and let the floodwater enter the fields of Jatois, saving te lives and property of people of district Dadu and its adjoining areas, they said, adding that floodwater would only damage the standing crops of Keti Jatoi area, while the human population would remain safe as almost all the people living in katcha areas had moved to safer places a few days back following the Red Alert issued by the district administration of Naushehro Feroz.
Sources said that jawans of Pakistan Army and Navy were closely monitoring the water level situation at Dadu-Moro Bridge, which was increasing consistently. In case the water level further increases at this station then two breaches would be made at Daulatpur and Bhanot bunds to avoid entrance of floodwater into these cities.
