The City District Government Karachi (CDGK) has sought Rs 100 million from the Sindh government to ensure provision of food and medicines to the flood affected people in the relief camps established in the city, Business Recorder learnt Friday.
According to sources, the city government was short of funds to meet the needs of the flood hit people, and the influx of displaced persons from interior Sindh has further complicated the situation. Sources also said the displaced persons were facing shortage of food as the relief camps were overcrowded, and added that so far more than 30,000 flood victims have been accommodated in the relief camps established mostly in government schools and colleges in various towns of the city.
The relief camps have been established in Sachal Goth, Mehmoodabad, Cattle Colony, Bin Qasim, Steel Town, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Keamari Town, Gaddap Town, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Dalmia, Gulshan-e-Maymar etc. Initially, the Sindh government has provided only Rs 4 million to the Revenue Department of the CDGK to arrange food for the victims at the relief camps, and the amount was utilised within a few days as the number of people had been increasing constantly, they added.
It is also learnt that some of the displaced persons had sought shelter in their relative's homes in Karachi, but returned back to the relief camps, as they could not be accommodated there. The EDO Revenue Roshan Ali Shaikh had recently forwarded a letter to the Finance Department of Sindh requesting for an immediate release of Rs 100 million, sources said.
They said a summary, for required arrangements at the relief camps, had been moved for an approval from the chief minister, and added the summary is likely to be approved soon. The registrations of the flood victims are also being done, which would help them in getting compensations, the sources said.
