At least 23 persons mostly children succumbed to gastro-enteritis in flood-hit areas of Southern Punjab during last 24 hours. Health Co-ordinator Punjab Shaikh Tariq Rashid said," we have received information from different areas of South Punjab where 23 persons, including children and women have died of gastro-enteritis while 1416 were hospitalised during last 24 hours.
DCO Vehari Muhammad Ashraf Chaudhry confirmed the death of four person Fatima(11), Iqra (8) Arsalan (13) and Muhammad Nazir (35) and 160 were admitted to hospitals. DCO Muzaffargarh Farasat Iqbal has confirmed the death of five persons in Muzaffargarh while 85 were admitted to hospital, DCO Multan Farrukh Ali Agha said. He said, "we are receiving information that one to three people are dying of gastro-entritis daily in Multan district. One hundred and seventy two are still in emergency ward.
Health authorities said," we have received reports of death of 23 persons including minor children due to use of contaminated water". They said that two persons died in Rahimyarkhan, five in Muzaffargarh, three in Kot Mithan, four in Vehari , two in Layyah, one each in Taunsa, Shah Jamal. More than 800 patients of gastro-enteritis were admitted to government hospitals of Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur hospitals.
