Former President Pervez Musharraf on Sunday said he would soon organise a telethon fundraising in Pakistan for the flood victims. The disastrous floods have badly hit one-fifth of Pakistan and have affected 20 million people in the country's worst ever-natural disaster.
In an exclusive interview with a private TV channel, Musharraf said he is planning to establish a foundation to collect donations and also to carry out relief and rehabilitation activities for the calamity-hit Pakistanis. Applauding armed forces' role in the flood relief works, he said Pakistan Army has the capability to successfully carry out rescue operations across the country.
To a question, he replied that local government was the right system to provide relief to the masses. "The local body system was the best possible system. If there were Nazims, Tehsil Nazims and Councillors, they would have provided relief to the people in their areas" said Musharraf. To another question, the former president demanded of the international community to write off Pakistan's loans in the wake of the disastrous situation caused by the flash floods.
"Pakistan needs donations, not loans from the international community", he said and added the international monetary institutions should write off tax service liability or reschedule Pakistan's loans.
