The United States has so far provided approximately $150 million to Pakistan for the relief works which are being carried out for the flood affected people, Business Recorder learnt Monday. According to information, given by the US Embassy, the assistance includes funds for the Pakistan National Disaster Management Authority, UN's emergency relief plan and various local and international organisations involved in the relief works.
The US has also provided millions of dollars of technical assistance. It is expanding the pre-existing programmes in the flood-affected areas, providing temporary bridges and mobilising US military and civilian resources for the flood victims.
The US military and civilian aircraft continues to support the flood relief operations and till August 22, these aircraft had evacuated 7,835 people and had delivered more than 1,600,000 pounds of relief supplies. On August 22, the US Air Force C-130 aircraft delivered 79,000 pounds of food and relief supplies from Rawalpindi to Sukkur and Multan.
The World Food Programme (WFP) has so far provided relief to more than 1.3 million flood-affected people with almost 16,000 metric tons of food, approximately 50 percent of which was provided by the United States. USAID Office of Food for Peace has provided the World Food Programme (WFP) an additional $32.3 million for local and regional procurement of food, bringing US's total contribution to more than $51 million. Since August 8, the US water treatment units have provided approximately 4.8 million litres of drinkable water.
