Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Wednesday telephoned Foreign Ministers of Germany and Portugal and discussed flood relief operations. Foreign Minister Qureshi briefed his counterparts from Germany and Portugal on the latest flood situation and the efforts under way to rescue people from the flood affected areas.
The German Foreign Minister, Guido Westerwelle expressed his country's solidarity and support with the government and the people of Pakistan in meeting this challenge. He said that besides the German government contribution, the German public had succeeded in raising $40 million for flood relief efforts.
The German government has also increased its assistance through bilateral channels and through the EU to over $50 million for flood relief. The Portuguese Foreign Minister, Luis Amado expressed sympathy over the loss of life and property due to the devastation caused by floods. He assured his country's support and expressed the hope that the resilient people would soon be able to overcome their difficulties. The Foreign Minister thanked his counterparts for their understanding and support.
