Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani has offered Pak army's services in distributing relief goods, collected by the business community, to help the flood affected people of the country. He made this offer in a meeting with the representatives of various trade bodies. This is the first such instance when the business community was invited to meet the army chief in this regard.
In the meeting Kayani said the army would airlift the relief goods and distribute them in such a way that all the needy people get a fair share. He appreciated the efforts of NGO's and other organisations in their collections and distributions of the relief goods, but said these organisations with their limited resources were finding it difficult to distribute the goods evenly in those areas where the infrastructure has been completely washed away.
The army chief emphasised the need of giving more attention to those areas which are in the most need of aid. He advised the business community to prepare small packets of commodities like milk, tea, rice, flour, cooking oil and other necessary items which are easier to distribute among the affected people.
He said Pakistan is facing its worst floods ever, which has displacing hundreds and thousands of people. He also said that planning is under way to re-build the destroyed areas and urged the business community to lend full support to this cause.
The business community assured full co-operation in the relief activities. They were also given a briefing, with the help of maps and videos, on the floods situation by the army personnel. The delegation included President Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Sultan Chawla, President Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) Abdul Majid Haji Mohammad, President India Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry S.M.Munir, Former President KCCI Siraj Kasim Teli, Yaseen Malik, Aqeel Karim Dhedehi, Arif Habib, Khalid Tawab, Senator Abdul Hasib Khan etc.
