'Women to be encouraged to join mainstream economy'

The country could witness an economic turnaround with a greater speed in these challenging times if the women, that are more than half of the country's total population, are encouraged to join the mainstream economy. Their participation in business will change complexion of the society and perception of the country.
Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Vice President, Faisal Iqbal Sheikh and Convenor Women Entrepreneurs Committee, Aasia Saail Khan expressed these views at the concluding ceremony of two-day "Women Networking Event and Exhibition", held at LCCI.
They said that women constitute 52 percent of the total population of the country but only 11 percent are engaged in business activity and are contributing to national economy while remaining have been confined to household affairs. They said that a little effort could help make this proposition the other way round.
The speakers said that though both the provincial and federal governments, in recent years, have focused more on the development of women entrepreneurs in the country, but due attention is needed by offering women focused opportunities in export of goods to the international market. The products prepared by women entrepreneurs should be allowed concession in taxes.
The speakers urged the government to come up with a more aggressive package for women entrepreneurs. Earlier, the exhibition was inaugurated by Jessica Barlo, Economic Consultant, US Consulate General, Lahore. Speaking on the occasion, she urged the women to come forward and show their abilities. She said that the conditions have much improved in Pakistan, both in rural and urban areas.
Today's women are well aware of their rights, are equally educated and are entering into non-traditional businesses like boutiques, beauty parlours, textile designing, printing and publishing, architecture, banking, IT, business management, fashion designing etc. Women entrepreneurs, with their flair and aesthetic sense, are introducing designer products related to garments, shoes, boutiques, jewellery, ladies handbags and some other accessories.
Jessica Barlo said women entrepreneurs should acquire modern techniques for business promotion and come forward with new ideas. Skill enhancement of women and their economic independence is need of the hour. LCCI former Presidents Mian Misbahur Rehman, Mian Muzaffar Ali, Executive Committee members Dr Shahid Raza and Imran Daud were also present on the occasion.
