A powerful current of 60,000 cusecs with seven-feet height gushing out of Main Nara Valley Drain and Johi Canal on Friday inundated Khairpur-Nathan Shah and Johi. Dadu's District Co-ordination Officer (DCO) Iqbal Memon has issued last warning to residents of Mehar, Taluka of District Dadu and other adjoining areas to evacuate their houses.
KN Shah town with a population of 250,000 and Johi town with a population of 300,000 were inundated. Floodwater submerged houses, hospitals, schools and the government installations in KN Shah and Johi town. A power grid station of 132 kV was inundated, resulting in power supply suspension to various towns and Talukas of District Dadu. Power supply could not be restored till filing of this report.
Along with KN Shah, 50 villages around the town also washed away after ravaging flood struck the area. Due to overtopping of water from the banks of Khuda Wah Canal, three kilometres area of Indus Highway got flooded. The inundation of Indus Highway cut off Karachi's link with upper Sindh districts of Larkana, Shikarpur, Qambar Shahdadkot and half of Dadu. The traffic could not be restored till filing of this report.
Floodwater gushing out of Khuda Wah Canal in KN Shah and Johi Canal at Kali Mori is fast advancing towards Rehmani Nagar and Dadu. A large number of people were stranded in KN Shah and Johi towns. Rescue teams have reached the affected areas and started rescue operation. People were reportedly calling for help from the rooftops of their houses in both the towns.
Floodwater gushing out of Supro embankment at Gaji Khuhawar, devastating hundreds of villages, finally struck with the muddy ring bunds at Wara and Naseerabad towns of District Qambar Shahdadkot. Initially, 50 villages of both towns were submerged in seven-feet high floodwater while pressure at the safety embankments of Wara and Naseerabad towns increased manifold. Water coming from Hamal Lake through MNV Drain and Flood Protective (FP) bund in District Dadu put profound pressure on the walls of both safety bunds. The water level in Manchar Lake and Hamal Lake reached the dangerous level. River Indus is not accepting water from Manchar Lake due to its high level.
Irrigation experts expressed fear that the water level in the Asia's biggest lake, Manchar Lake, is increasing one decimal every hour. Water in the lake is at the dangerous level and there are threats that the lake would overflow. If this happens, the entire district of Dadu and Sehwan, a Taluka of District Jamshoro, would face inundation, they added.
They said the spillways of Manchar Lake could not be reopened due to high flood in the River Indus at Kotri Barrage upstream and low level of water in the lake. "If we reopen spillways, floodwaters from River Indus would enter the lake," they said.
Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah had ordered to make a breach at Dhamraho Wah Branch from Mehar to reduce pressure on Supro embankment. If the branch would not be breached at Mehar town, water gushing out of the breaches of Supro bund would submerge Wara, Naseerabad and enter District Larkana by destroying Badhay and Dhokri at the border of Larkana.
Sindh CM had ordered to make a breach in Dhamraho Wah Branch at Mehar to save Wara, Naseerabad in District Shahdadkot and District Larkana. The elected members of parliament from District Dadu condemned the decision saying that certain persons in the provincial government were planning to destroy farmlands and industries of others to save their properties.
