Unprecedented floods may occur every year due to global warming and if more dams are not built and precautionary measures not adopted, these could be more disastrous than this year, warned renowned nuclear scientist Dr Samar Mubarak Mand in an interview. The global warming and melting of glaciers are the main reasons for the weather system which resulted in floods.
Developed nations have done huge industrial pollution as they burn natural fuels in high quantity, which results in high production of CO2, he stated. Dr Mand said aerosols, mainly used in perfumes and refrigerators destroyed ozone layer, which protects the people from harmful rays of sun. He said scientists at the "Kyoto Conference" held in Japan had warned that if the industrial pollution and use of aerosols continued, it could be disastrous for human race.
That conference focused to use Choloroflourocarbons (CFCs) instead of aerosols in refrigerators and also to ensure capture of CO2, he added. He said that Pakistan was also observing these measures and most industries are adopting CO2 capture measures.
Replying to a question he said Pakistan must build Kalabagh dam so that a natural calamity could be turned in opportunity. If today more dams were available, all the floodwater could have been restored and ultimately used for irrigation purpose, he said. When asked about adopting preventive measures from earthquake, Dr Mand said the federal capital is in the earthquake zone.
"We built some model earthquake proof houses in Balakot, now it depends upon government to create awareness among people to built their homes on this technique". He further said that existing buildings can be reinforced and made earthquake proof, adding Hazara university is built on this technique.
Talking about country's nuclear programme he brushed aside the western propaganda and said "By grace of Allah nuclear programme of Pakistan is in safe hands and whoever talks about it, is just for his vested interests". As far as India is concerned, now both the countries enjoy balanced power equation. Nuclear deterrence have assured safety, security and peace in this region for many years, he added.
