Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) assessment plan requires Rs two million to restore and re-functionalise each of the 92 affected PEF partner schools situated in the flood-affected southern districts, which have been badly hit by the gushing waters.
The amount is estimated for the construction of a school with four class-rooms, principal's office, toilet and necessary furniture for the students, disclosed PEF Managing Director Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani while briefing a three-member delegation of Telenor Pakistan headed by Manager Public Affairs (North) Nasir Imam Bukhari at PEF, here on Tuesday. Wani told the meeting that most of the affected schools are situated in the marooned districts of Bhakkar, Dera Ghazi Khan, Jhang, Layyah, while the survey of badly-hit tehsils of peripheral Rajanpur district has not yet held due to travelling hurdles in the affected areas.
PEF is going to launch a comprehensive flood assessment survey after Eid holidays, he added. "As the 80 percent of PEF partnership infrastructure is situated in southern districts, therefore, PEF is especially striving to rehabilitate the affected schools with the support of corporate sector. The affected schools are 5 percent of the total partner schools," he concluded.
Earlier, Project Officer (CPDP) Ms Maryum Shakir presented a detailed presentation to the delegation about the flood assessment conducted by PEF and told that out of 92 schools, found to be affected so far, 64 are Foundation Assisted Schools (FAS) while 28 others are registered under New School Programme.
She informed meeting that PEF is partnered with 1,776 schools in 29 districts under FAS programme and 129 schools in eight districts for New School Programme in Punjab. She said out of more than 800,000 students enrolled under FAS programme, 52 percent are female and 48 percent are male. Females are more benefiting of PEF mode of public private-partnership, she added.
