The high-profile security arrangements in the Federal Capital by Islamabad Police helped avert a major possible disaster as a terror bid to blow up oil tankers and containers of Nato forces was foiled and two suspected persons arrested.
"It could be possible only because of the high vigilance and strict checking that Islamabad Police successfully averted terror attempt by defusing two bombs planted in an oil tanker which was stopped near Rawat," said a spokesman of Islamabad Police here on Monday.
Islamabad Police received information that bombs had been planted under the Nato tankers and containers parked at the Attock Filling Station on G T Road near Rawat, the spokesman said. Following this information, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Kaleem Imam constituted a special team led by DIG (Operations) Binyameen and SSP Islamabad Tahir Alam Khan, which rushed towards the scene along with heavy contingent of police and cordoned off the area, he said. Bomb Disposal Squad and Fire Brigade were called and traffic on GT Road was diverted to avoid inconvenience to the road users, he added.
The staff of this filling station was shifted to a safe place and a search operation was started by the police, he said. It was observed that petrol was leaking from a tanker bearing registration number TLM-783 and was moving towards GT Road. Police ensured quick action to stop this leakage and sandbags were placed there as precautionary measure, the spokesman said.
He said after search of oil tankers, policemen found two bombs in the small pockets near the place spared for keeping tyres of oil tanker (Z-5756). Bomb Disposal Squad defused the bombs, he added. Two suspects were nabbed during this operation from whom investigation is under way. A case has also been registered under FIR No 193 dated 12-09-2010, at Sihala police station against unknown terrorists under 436, 511 PPC, 3/4 EA.
