According to experts, much of the wide spread destruction caused by the floods could have been reduced greatly if the concerned departments of the government had preformed their duties and our major dams, rivers and water reservoirs had been properly maintained and dredged regularly. This would have increased their capacity to store water and we would not have witnessed flooding on such a large scale.
For six decades, the system of governance in Pakistan has gradually collapsed and our country has been abused and raped by selfish, opportunists. They have mercilessly robbed our country of its pride, dignity and wealth, while we have watched in silence.
They have mauled our Constitution beyond recognition, destroyed our judiciary and our institutions and corrupted the moral of our country. They have destroyed the rule of law, with their 'One law for you and one law for me' syndrome, repeatedly disgraced and humiliated our Quaid's proud Pakistan and today it stands with its head bowed in shame in front of the world community.
Therefore, we should not be grieving just over the loss of innocent men, women and children who have died because of the floods, but also be grieving for the loss of our ethics and moral values. We have forgotten the teachings of Islam, which tells us to be good, decent and honest human beings. We are all prepared to die for our religion, but are not prepared to practice what it teaches us.
The brutality and the savagery showed by the young men, who beat two innocent young boys to death and then hung them upside down from a lamppost, is a tragic reflection of what our society and what our country has become. No doubt, the present system of government has failed miserably and must be changed, but one would have thought, that from our bitter, past experience of army interventions, the days of the generals were over.
What we need is, not army intervention, but across the board accountability and the strict enforcement of the rule of law, with a zero tolerance policy, without fear or favour. The NRO was supposed to have initiated this process, but then again, in democracy, parliament is supreme and guess who controls the parliament?
