Manchester United failed to break down a disciplined Rangers defence as the British rivals drew 0-0 in their opening Champions League Group C match at Old Trafford on Tuesday. The three-times European champions, who made 10 changes from the team which drew 3-3 with Everton in the Premier League on Saturday, dominated possession but lacked the creativity to break down a massed Scottish defence.
"The players played with great intensity and commitment and worked their socks off," United manager Alex Ferguson told Sky Sports. United made few clearcut chances, midfielder Darron Gibson going closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half with a fizzing 20-metre shot which flew just past the post. The hosts' rhythm was disrupted when Ecuador winger Antonio Valencia suffered a serious-looking ankle injury and England striker Wayne Rooney, recalled after missing the Everton game following his personal problems, had a quiet match. Spanish side Valencia won 4-0 at Turkey's Bursaspor in the other match in the group.
Lyon win
Olympique Lyon scraped a 1-0 win over Schalke 04 in their Champions League opener on Tuesday though on this form they will struggle to get out of Group B let alone reach the semi-finals like last season. Lyon, playing in Europe's premier club competition for the 11th time in a row, were stronger than the Germans and took the lead after 21 minutes through Brazilian Michel Bastos but they failed to score again despite having the numerical advantage.
