Paradise Papers: Shakira, Nicole Kidman, Madonna have millions in offshore tax havens
The massive leak of secret documents has already caught up a string of household names from celebs to royalty in a tax scandal sweeping the globe. Many celebrities were dragged into paradise papers row including Nicole Kidman, Justin Timberlake, Harvey Weinstein, Madonna and Shakira.
Some of the celebrities’ interests are historical, others contemporary. Some are similar to those of the singer Shakira, who holds a substantial portion of her showbusiness earnings offshore. Others such as Justin Timberlake and Nicole Kidman seem more interested in acquiring property in the Bahamas, and may have real estate or privacy reasons for registering companies in those jurisdictions, The Guardian reported.
Shakira transferred £30million in musical rights to an offshore firm in Malta. Malta Tournesol Limited, the star's company, is based on the Mediterranean island of Malta, known for its tax incentives.
The papers – which were released Sunday by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), include 13.4 million documents that detail offshore holdings by high-profile figures like Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Queen Elizabeth II.
Bollywood celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt’s wife Manyata Dutt have also appeared in the papers.
