Two protest demonstrations were organised by the traders of Sadar Bazar and adjacent shopping centres in the cantonment area and Vehari Road, Multan against inflated bills of electricity wherein a large number of women also protested. They burnt power bills and an effigy of Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco) CEO Guftar Ahmed, and shouted slogans against Mepco authorities.
The demo was organised by People's Seraiki Party and led by Zul-Naurain Bhutta. The protestors said they did not use electricity during the month of August and have no air-conditioner, refrigerator, air-cooler, or electric iron at their homes, but received bills with heavy amount.
They said they consume only so much electricity to lit two or three energy savers, and one fan but they have received electricity bills of Rs 3,000 to 7,000. Addressing the demonstrators, the speakers said Mepco is honeycombed with corruption and power theft burden is put on poor consumers. They demanded publicly hanging corrupt, dishonest and bad reputed elements of Mepco.
