22nd Convocation of Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) was held amid high security and extra ordinary security measures were taken by the administration of the University as well as the provincial administration due to the security threats given to elite institutions in the past.
The keynote speaker at the Convocation was Dr Mehmood Khan who is Senior Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer of PepsiCo, Inc, where he is responsible for leading the company's global Research and Development (R&D) functions. While Pro-Chancellor LUMS Syed Babar Ali, Rector Razzaq Daud and vice-chancellor Dr Ahmad Jan Durrani was also present on the occasion. Degrees were awarded to 626 students, which includes 203 graduates, 423 undergraduates and 20 law graduates.
Speaking on the occasion Dr Mahmood Khan has said that learning is a continuous process and without taking risks progress is not possible. He said Pakistan is facing critical times and there is an economic crunch in the country as well as it was hit by unprecedented funds. He said that followers would decide who would be their leader. He spoke about how reinventing yourself is vital throughout ones career. He emphasised that importance of aspiring to be a leader and the eagerness to learn needs to be there through out, along with humility in order to be successful in life.
Later at the ceremony, degrees were awarded to the graduates. Also on this occasion, the National Management Foundation, the governing body at LUMS, awarded gold and silver medals to graduates securing top positions in various programmes. The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) is celebrating 25 years of academic excellence this year and held its 22nd Annual Convocation on September 25, 2010.
An evening earlier, on September 24, 2010, the traditional Graduate Night dinner was held where graduates achieving distinctions in subject areas and those making it to the coveted Dean's Honour List were awarded medals and shields. 67 graduating students who made it to the Dean's Honour list and/or received Corporate Gold Medals were honoured, with their proud parents, friends and faculty warmly appreciating their achievements with cheer and applause. The sparkling ceremony concluded in the late evening with a formal dinner organised at the award winning lawns of LUMS. As a part of LUMS 25 Years Celebrations, the first two Alumni batches (MBA 1988, MBA 1989) were also invited to the Graduate Night Dinner.
The idea was for the newest alumni batch to see the earliest alumni who contributed largely to the success and repute of their Alma Mater making it the LUMS of today. The senior alumni got a chance to talk to the graduating classes and shared their student life at LUMS, fond memories, experiences and how the institution has made a difference to their life.
