Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Sunday reiterated that no unconstitutional change would be acceptable, saying that baseless accusations are being levelled against the government. Talking to senior journalists here, the Prime Minister reiterated that cases against the President could not be re-opened, arguing that President enjoys immunity under Article 248 of the Constitution.
He said that Supreme Court couldn't amend Constitution, it could only interpret it and the Parliament has the authority to amend the Constitution. The government, he said, respects the Supreme Court and its decisions and hoped that the apex court would not take any step, which would proved harmful for the institutions.
The Prime Minister stated that media wanted us to extradite President Asif Ali Zardari to Swiss authorities and warned that media will be the big loser, if democracy was derailed. He was of the view that President's name is not included in the list of NRO beneficiaries which he received from the Establishment Division.
Gilani insisted that the government is stable and withstand all the challenges, saying that the forces would be disappointed who talk about change through undemocratic means. To a question, the Prime Minister said that he had a meeting with Chief Justice of Pakistan few days back, but did not mention where it was held.
He further said that he would meet Chief of Army Staff on Monday and also indicated to hold meeting with Chief Justice of Pakistan. To a question, Gilani said he did not care even if he was removed from the office, however, he said, media has been spreading such rumours for the last two years about the change but it never happened.
"If anyone feels that we are corrupt, he/she must go to the courts. We have not come to power through backdoor channels rather through elections," Gilani maintained. Besides, the Prime Minister also informed media about his telephonic conversation with Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif and said that they have decided to settle all the issues through negotiations and talks.
APP adds: "My message is loud and clear that those, who want removal of the government through unconstitutional means, should learn from history," Prime Minister said. He urged PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif and other democratic forces to discourage those, who were conspiring against democracy. He categorically said that the government was not going and it would stay to protect the institutions.
Those, who are giving deadlines about departure of government, should give a final deadline and then let the government complete its tenure, he added. The Prime Minister said only parliament can rewrite the constitution.
About the summary sent by the Law Ministry on reopening of Swiss cases, he said the Supreme Court has to look into many issues including article 248 before moving forward.
Gilani said the President is the supreme commander of the armed forces and part of parliament and Swiss cases were past and a closed transaction. He said," it would be against the national honour and Pakistan's sovereignty to hand over your President to Swiss courts".
It was like the case of Aafia Siddiqui who was daughter and honour of the nation, so there should not be double standards, he said while drawing a comparison of the two cases.
"Already a judicial murder had taken place and now restrictions could not be imposed on ideology and mission of the Pakistan People's Party," he remarked. They have great regard for the judiciary, he said adding he would appreciate change in government in a constitutional manner.
