The Ministry of Environment has finalised the first-ever forest policy and submitted it to the Cabinet. The policy envisages enhancement of forest cover, which is vital in meeting the challenges of climate change. This was stated by Environment Minister Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi while addressing a book launching ceremony of eminent scientist and environmentalist Dr G M Khattak titled "In Pursuit of Excellence," here on Monday.
"Previously there was no forest policy and the ministry has formulated forest policy in consultation with all the stakeholders and submitted to the cabinet for approval," said Afridi. Afridi said forestry sector has its due importance and government is utilising all possible resources to enhance forest cover. The Ministry of Environment is providing maximum assistance to the provincial governments for promotion of mega forestry project. He said global warming and climate change are threats for all and the ministry is committed to face this challenge.
"Forest management is community-based sector and enhancement of this sector is need of time for sustainable development," said minister, adding that the government is providing all possible funds for mega project of forests and promotion of social forestry.
Environment Minister further said that climate change and environmental degradation are major threats for whole world and Pakistan is playing its due role to face this challenge. Behavioural change is important to over-come environmental issues, Afridi added. While addressing the ceremony, federal minister said Dr G M Khattak is the only scientist in the discipline of forestry who has been admitted as a fellow of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences.
"The book reflects the selfless effort in developing environmental, educational and specially forestry institutions in Pakistan," Afridi added. The minister said this book is the reflection of the writer's broad vision for hope of better future, which will guide towards professional, prosperous and meaningful life. Addressing on this occasion, Dr G M Khattak said keeping in view the modern world, there is need to improve forestry sector. He urged social workers, civil society and other stakeholders to play pivotal role for healthy environment.
