The nation should brace itself for the inevitable severe power shortage knocking at its doors as hydel power generation dropped by further 1,000 MW during the past twenty four hours due to cut in water releases from the dams.
The Ist October rivers flows and reservoirs level report of Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) indicated that Indus River System Authority has curtailed Tarbela dam donwstream water releases from 90,000 cusecs to 45,000 cusecs that has markedly reduced electricity production of the Tarbela hydel power houses.
Explaining power situation of the country, a spokesman of Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) said the hydel, thermal, IPPs and RPPs units produced 11,240 MW on Friday against the demand of 15,627 MW electricity. Pepco supplied 670 MW electricity to KESC. He said hydel power units of Tarbela, Mangla, Ghazi Barotha etc generated 4,687 MW as against Thursday production of 5,667 MW, thermal power houses produced 1744 MW, Independent Power Producers 4,747 MW and RPPs 62 MW electricity.
After the monsoon season virtually being over, water flow in the four rivers has been steadily decreasing and it has come down to 1.18,000 cusecs at the upper rim stations, a decrease of 12,000 cusecs water in a day. River Indus is flowing with 55,200 cusecs, river Kabul 25,100, river Jhelum 16,700 and river Chenab 21,600 cusecs water. However, river Sutlej is in low flood with a flow of 40,000 to 55,000 cusecs water in Qasur, Okara, Bahawalnagar and Bahawalpur districts. Meanwhile Met Office has forecast mainly dry weather in most parts of the country. However, isolated rain may occur in Gilgit Baltistan.
