Lawyers of Multan High Court on Friday organised a rally and staged demonstration at SP Chowk on the call of Human Rights Committees of Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) to strongly condemn the unfair, unjust and illegal 86-year sentence awarded to Dr Aafia Siddiqui by a US court.
Also, district bars of Muzaffargarh, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, Rajanpur, Layyah, Khanewal, Vehari, Lodhran, Bahawalnagar, Rahimyarkhan, Pakpattan, Sadiqabad observed complete strike on Friday. Addressing the rally, President of High Court Bar Multan, Sheikh Jamshed Hayat said the verdict, given after a fast-track trial under the shadow of bias, and that too in the absence of any credible and solid evidence, blatantly negates internationally recognised legal norms and ethics.
He noted that the US court seems so much pre-determined and biased that it also ignored the fact that she (Dr Aafia) already underwent an ordeal of being subject to continuous torture in US prison for more than five years. Hayat also flayed Musharraf regime for handing over Dr Aafia Siddiqui to US authorities, thus ensuring its perpetuation in power, even at the cost of Pakistani citizens.
He demanded of the government to take immediate steps and accelerate its efforts on political, diplomatic and legal fronts for early repatriation of Dr Aafia Siddiqui to Pakistan. President Multan High Court Bar also called upon global human rights organisations and the civil society of US to record strong protest against the unjust and unfair trial of Dr Aafia Siddiqui and awarding her a harsh sentence of 86 years.
This sentence, he said, has been given on the unbelievable and apparently false charges of attempting to murder a US soldier whereas in fact, she (Dr Aafia) was herself brutally assaulted and severely injured by US armed soldiers. Participants on the occasion chanted slogans against American administration, US judiciary and rulers of Pakistan. Two more demonstrations were staged in Multan by Pasban and Jamat-e-Islami to condemn unfair conviction to Dr Aafia.
