A division bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) here on Wednesday extended interim bail to former director general intelligence bureau Brigadier Imtiaz Ahmad (Retd) and also summoned prosecution and defence counsels for November 08. The bench on September 23 had released him interim bail after the Supreme Court got him arrested and directed to deposit surety bonds in high court.
Brigadier Imtiaz was required by national accountability bureau in a reference of illegal assets as his eight years conviction awarded by an accountability court stood revived after nullification of national reconciliation ordinance. The petitioner's counsel Maqsooma Bokhari had pleaded to the court that his client was 73 years old and ill with heart disease so he might be granted release on bail. She said Imtiaz had undergone by-pass operations.
The NAB counsel opposed grant of bail to the petitioner on various grounds. He said before his arrest Brigadier Imtiaz (Retd) was continuously appearing in different programmers of news channels and there were no sign of aliment on him. The court after hearing the parties however, allowed bail to the petitioner on his furnishing the bail bonds in the sum of Rs 20 million.
