Transportation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato) and the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) containers has caused a loss of Rs 6 billion to National Highway Authority (NHA) network to date. This was stated by Chairman NHA Altaf Ahmad Chaudhry while addressing the participants of 93rd National Management Course.
The chairman said that Mirpurkhas - Khokhrapar highway is among the priority project and work on it will start next year. The project will help improve transportation with link India. Altaf Ahmad Chaudhry said that total length of NHA network is 11900 Kms throughout the country. Presently work on 66 Projects of 4400 Km length is in progress at cost of Rs 243 billion. Another 66 projects are planned for future, which will be completed at an estimated cost of Rs 530 billion.
Speaking about the use of NHA network by the containers of Nato and ISAF, he disclosed that such heavy transportation has considerably damaged the roads and the loss is calculated up to Rs 6 billion up till now. He informed the participants that NHA is implementing a gigantic National Trade Corridor (NTC) programme, under which International Standard Highways and Motorways linking with ports and borders are being completed.
In the coming 5-6 years Rs 300 billion will be spent on this programme. He further said that Dora Pass Project at height of 7000 feet would also be undertaken to provide access to Tajikistan and onward Central Asia Republics. Dean of National Management College Rahat-ul-Ain appreciated the services of NHA for socio-economic development of the country.
