Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has constituted seven benches, including a larger bench at the principal seat to hear a number of important cases in the next week, starting from October 18.
A 17-member larger bench headed by the Chief Justice and comprising all the available judges of the apex court will resume hearing on Monday a case related to media reports alleging that the government was considering withdrawal of the notification of March 16, 2009 about restoration of the judges of superior courts.
Last Friday, the bench had already passed a restraining order that withdrawal of notification was not possible after the apex Court had settled the issue in its July 31, 2009 decision while any ultra constitutional move against judiciary would tantamount to treason under Article 6 of the Constitution.
In the latest development, the court issued notices to Chairman Pemra, executive officers/directors news of three private channels for Monday.
While six regular benches will also function in the next week. The first bench includes the Chief Justice, Justice Ghulam Rabbani and Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday, the second bench of Justice Javed Iqbal, Justice Muhammad Sair Ali and Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, third bench of Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan, Justice Mahmood Akhtar Shahid Siddiqui and Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, fourth bench of Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, Justice Khilji Arif Hussain and Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, fifth bench of Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk, Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja and Justice Rahmat Hussain Jafferi, the sixth bench of Justice Raja Fayyaz Ahmed and Justice Tariq Parvez.
According to cause lists, no application for adjournment through fax will be placed before the court. If the counsel is unable to appear for any reason the Advocate-on-Record will be required to argue the case. Besides, no adjournment on any ground will be granted.
