Blasphemous caricatures on FB: LHC seeks replies from federal government by November 21

The Lahore High Court on Wednesday sought detailed replies from the federal government by November 21 on issue of presenting a resolution in general assembly of United Nations against initiation of a competition on "Facebook" featuring blasphemous caricatures.
The court was hearing a petition seeking permanent ban on a social networking website, Facebook in wake of availability of blasphemous material on site. Muhammad Azhar Siddique advocate on Wednesday told the court that in its May 31 order, the LHC had directed federal government to present a resolution in UNO's general assembly through Pakistan permanent ambassador.
But despite lapse of four months no such resolution has been tabled so far which is sheer violation of court's order. Upon which, Chairman judicial activism panel (JAP) Muhammad Azhar Siddique, the petitioner, doubted the statement of the director saying objectionable material was still accessible in country.
He also pointed out that the court on previous hearing had ordered police to reseal FIR registered with Civil Lines police station against owners of Facebook, for holding a blasphemous cartoon contest. But the police had not obeyed that order so far, he added.
