Punjab Law Minister, Rana Sanaullah has said kidnapping for ransom cases have decreased as 112 cases in 2010 and 170 cases in 2009 were registered. He pointed that this increase in cases was due to FIR registration policy adopted by the provincial government.
In 102 cases 64 criminals were awarded sentence by the courts, he said while speaking at general debate on law and order in the 20th session of Punjab Assembly on Wednesday. He said around 2960378 cases were registered in 2010, out of which 210387 cases were in trial in the courts while 136515 cases were decided out of them.
The minister said that for improving law and order situation, a change in Police Order 2002 was on anvil. He said loadshedding was the factor that had resulted in economic decay and increase in crime. The minister disclosing about terrorist acts said that 257 people including 24 policemen were killed in such incidents.
"We have arrested 2360 trained Afghan boys. He added that they had checked 81425 persons while crossing border out of which 1591 persons were arrested. The minister pointed that from these persons nine suicide jackets, 27987 kilo detonation material and 12 rocket launchers were recovered.
The minister dilating that in 212 police encounters in 2010, 168 persons were killed, 221 arrested while 32 policemen embraced martyrdom in these encounters. After half an hour of namaz period, the House was in session where senior legislator Sardar Zulifqar Khan Khosa apprised the House of the higher value of the institution in which he said nation was looking at their behaviour imploring that they should adopt an attitude where democracy should be strengthened rather derailed. MPA Syed Nazim Shah PPP in his speech too raised similar sentiments where with such remarks from varied ends made betterment in situation.
The minister responding to a query pointed that reservoirs of high quality iron were found in surroundings of Chiniot and Rajva. He said these reservoirs could amply serve the needs of the country. The minister said estimates of these remained at 610 million tonne.
The minister to another query said that four industrial estates had been established in Lahore namely: Quaid-e-Azam Industrial Estate- 1964- 565 Acre; Sundar Industrial Estate-2004- 1602 Acres; Small Industries Estate Lakhpat-1961-62-9.75 acre; Small Industries Estate Sundar Raiwind 2003-2004-910 Kanal 10 Marla. He said in Quaid-e-Azam Industrial Estate Township there were 469 plots of different sizes. The House was later adjourned by the chair.
