Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday said the government was committed to the revival of the agriculture, devastated by the country's worst ever natural disaster. Talking to Chairman Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) Dr Zafar Altaf here at the PM House, Gilani termed agriculture as the backbone of economy.
He said the government has decided to provide free seeds and fertilisers to farmers with 25 acres of land, and the provincial governments will aid the farmers get better yield by providing them insecticides and educate them regarding optimal use of resources.
The Prime Minister said that the role of PARC in the wake of recent devastating floods has multiplied, being the apex agricultural research organisation at national level. He asked PARC to co-ordinate with provincial components to strengthen the agricultural sector.
He said the farmers need to be educated about the latest technology and the use of farm machinery as he believed that concerted efforts of research institutions can revolutionise the agricultural economy of the country.
Chairman, PARC apprised the Prime Minister of various projects taken up by PARC that include launch of Benazir TV and FM Radio Station to educate the farmers about agriculture technology in simplified manner according to their needs in their relevant areas.
The channel will cater to the needs of 6.6 million farmer households nation-wide. He said the PARC was growing high density crops of mangoes and pears, to get increased per acre yield, with optimal use of good quality seeds, in areas of low water table. He also discussed projects to cover the neglected and barren areas through agriculture research and its application in Pakistan.
