Gunship shelling over suspected militants positions and armed clashes near Afghan border in Orakzai and Mohmand tribal regions on Thursday killed 17 Taliban fighters and injured 16 others, security official said.
The gunship helis targeted militants' hideouts in Khadezai, Mashatri Kandao and Mamozai towns in upper Orakzai agency killing 12 militants. Six insurgents were injured and three hideouts destroyed in the shelling which the forces resumed in the region after a long pause.
Separately five militants were killed and 10 injured as clashes broke out between the forces and militants after the Taliban attacked a check post of Amn (Peace) Committee in Bakhmal Shah area in tehsil Ambaar in Mohmand agency. A Razakar of the peace committee also killed in the gun battle while in the retaliation firing, the members of the peace committee gunned down five insurgents. One of the militants went missing after the shootout. The firing continued for over two hours between the two sides. The attackers after massive reply by the Peace Committee retreated and the forces recaptured the area.
