Punjab Education Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman has on Thursday inaugurated Global Countdown, a digital role-playing game developed by Telenor Pakistan, based on environmental awareness specifically for the youth. In August 2009, Global Countdown was installed at the Children's Library Complex (CLC) Lahore under an agreement between Telenor Pakistan, CLC and Punjab's Environment Protection Department (EPD).
On the occasion, the agreement was renewed by EPD and Telenor for further two years, which was inked by Telenor Vice President Amir Ibrahim and EPA Director General Dr Shafqufta Shahjehan. While addressing the signing ceremony, the Minister said introduction of game like Global Countdown will help create awareness about environment among the children, which will prepare the future generation to meet the environmental challenges that we see today. He appreciated the Telenor for its contribution in the rehabilitation of flood affectees.
Telenor Vice President, Amir Ibrahim said Telenor is a responsible organisation and is committed to protect environment. He said the company realises the environmental impact of generators run on diesel, which have been installed at Telenor towers to meet the power shortage. "Hence, company has replaced the generators with solar systems in its 50 mobile towers," he added.
Meanwhile, the game is currently being played by the public school students of Lahore twice a week to experience state-of-the art tools, increase knowledge about the environment and encourage environmentally responsible behaviour. So far, a total of 1300 students from 23 public schools have played the game. Each week a group of 20-25 students from different public schools are invited to CLC to play the game. They are given an orientation session on the game and its guidelines, divided into teams and subsequently allowed to play the game under supervision of the Global Countdown trainer.
