Special initiatives will be taken to enhance efficiency of Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (Smeda) in development of the SME sector in Pakistan, said Federal Minister for Industries and Production, Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani while addressing a meeting at the Smeda head office here on Thursday.
Chief Executive Officer Smeda, Anwar Ahmad Khan gave a presentation to the minister regarding the authority's role in promotion of small and medium level businesses. Easy access to finance is need of the SMEs that required an proper mechanism supported with a conducive environment at government level, the minister said and advised the Smeda management to co-ordinate with the State Bank of Pakistan so that financing to the SME sector could be encouraged. He also assured to take up the matter of SME financing with quarters concerned in the government.
Bijarani said that present government is committed to curb poverty and unemployment in the country, for which growth of small and medium enterprises is essential. He also stressed the need for acceleration of pace of SME development in the country.
Earlier, Smeda chief Anwar Ahmad Khan in his presentation highlighted the services, projects and organisational structure of Smeda and said that Smeda had undertaken about 18 public sector development projects worth Rs 2.7 billion across the country, apart from devising sector development strategies and providing business development services to SMEs. Smeda General Manager Business and Sector Development Services, Sultan Tiwana, General Manager, Central Support Iftikhar Hussain, Principal Chief Smeda-Punjab Alamgir Chaudhry, and other officials were also present.
