Tea import from India has increased significantly as its share in total trade surged to 28.40 percent in October 2010. The import figures show that share of India in total tea import during the fiscal year FY10 remained at a much lower level of 8.68 percent.
On the other hand, the share of Kenya, the traditional partner in the trade of black tea declined to 46.50 percent in October 2010 as compared to its share of 60.95 percent during FY10. Pakistan imported 7.789 million kg black tea, worth Rs 1.481 billion, in October 2010, against 10.324 million kg, worth Rs 1.846 billion imported in September 2010.
Indian share in total tea import to Pakistan has been increasing every month of the current fiscal year. In August, 19.6 percent tea was imported from India, and this share increased to 27.05 percent in September. Pakistan, being one of the largest tea consuming countries in the world, imports this commodity from 22 different countries.
