Former Prime Minister and convenor Muttahida Muslim League (MML)'s Steering Committee, Mir Zafarullah Jamali, on Thursday met PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif at his Raiwind residence and formally invited him to join MML. However, Nawaz sought time for consultation with his party cadre to give a formal reply to the invitation.
Sources told Business Recorder that the two former premiers also exchanged views on country's prevailing economic and political situation and expressed their resolve to play due role for steering the country out of the prevailing crises. Both the leaders showed concern over rising inflation, escalating price hike and increasing unemployment, which are causing manifold problems for the masses.
Talking to Jamali, the PML-N chief said that all the political parties must play their role for eradication of corruption and controlling price hike in the country. Any alliance that is not in the country's interest is aimless, the sources quoted Nawaz as saying during the meeting.
Talking to journalists after the meeting, Jamali accompanied by Zulfiqar Khosa and Dr Asif Kirmani, termed his meeting with Nawaz Sharif as positive and said he is optimistic about positive development. He was of the view that big decisions cannot be taken within a day; however, ground has been prepared for change in the circumstances. "I do not belong to any party. I just want unity of Muslim leagues. My only agenda is to unite Muslim Leagues in the interest of the country," Jamali opined.
He further said that responsibility rest with major politicians and they must strive for resolving the manifold problems being confronted by the country setting aside their petty differences. "All of us should rise above our personal interests for the attainment of national objectives," he said. Expressing grave concern over the plight of countrymen and prevailing situation of the country, Jamali said that poor people miseries have been increased manifold. Regarding situation of Balochistan, Jamali said that any package for Balochistan could not be fruitful without resolving the real issues of the province.
"Unless and until the province of Balochistan is given its rights, no package could be fruitful," he said. He also expressed gratitude to Nawaz Sharif and said, "irrespective of politics, we are friend." However, he reiterated his desire for unification of all leagues. He said that Nawaz Sharif should join MML in the larger interest of the country.
On the occasion Zulfiqar Khosa said that the PML-N chief had made it clear to Jamali that he (Nawaz) would respond after consulting with his party leaders. Sources in the MML told this scribe that no positive outcome was expected as a result of Thursday's meeting between Nawaz Sharif and Mir Zafarullah Jamali.
