Minister of State for Interior Tasneem Qureshi on Thursday informed Senate that crimes rate has increased during the last three years in the country over 28,296 cases of abduction were registered. Responding to various questions of the members in the Upper House during question hour, he said that the government was taking strict measures to control crimes and bring peace to society.
However, expressing dissatisfaction over the situation, Deputy Chairman Jan Mohammad Jamali, who was chairing the House, directed the Ministry of Interior to give detailed briefing to the Senate on the deteriorating law and order situation after Eid-ul-Azha. Qureshi said that law and order was a prime issue which needs combined efforts of all political forces to control the situation as government alone cannot succeed in overcoming terrorism and other crimes.
In a written reply to the House, the Interior Minister said that a total of 20,971 cases of abductions were registered in Punjab during 2007, 2008 and 2009 while 30,246 cases prosecuted and 5472 cases disposed of during the said period. In Sindh, it was told, a total of 5,856 cases of abductions were registered out of which 1,536 were prosecuted and 2,815 were disposed of during the three years. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the minister informed that a total of 1,039 cases of abduction were registered, out of which, 689 were prosecuted and 689 were disposed of during the said period.
In Balochistan, he said that the total cases of abduction recorded during the said years were 391 out of which 197 were prosecuted and 54 were disposed of. In Federal Capital Islamabad, the cases of abduction registered during the three years were 155, out of which, 73 were prosecuted and 62 disposed of. While in Gilgit Baltistan, the minister said that 37 cases of abduction were registered, 24 were prosecuted and four were disposed of during the said period.
Expressing displeasure over the deteriorated law and order situations, the Deputy Chairman gave the ruling that all the Inspector Generals (IGs) and Secretary Homes should be called in a meeting to discuss the law and order and provide complete details of the abduction cases of their respective areas. Qureshi suggested that all the Chief Ministers should also be invited to the meeting so that a collective policy could be formulated.
Meanwhile, Minister for Frontier Regions Najmuddin informed the House that the federal government has created 2500 jobs in Levis in FATA out of which 800 vacancies have been filled. He said job opportunities were provided to over 3,500 youngsters in various agencies of the tribal areas during the last five years.
