Pakistan has said that the permanent Security Council seat for India and some other countries would be inequitable and suggested region-wise allocation of seats on rotation basis.
Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Abdullah Hussain Haroon, on Saturday said that Pakistan would support the formula that the regions, like South Asia, South-East Asia and others, should be allocated permanent seats in the Security Council, and this representation should rotate among the countries of that region.
He said Pakistan would also support the representation of Muslim Ummah in the Security Council with the permanent membership of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC).
He was briefing media on the issues relating to Security Council of the UNO here. He said that Pakistan strongly opposes permanent Security Council seat for India and some other countries, saying that this representation would be inequitable, non-representative, and non-transparent.
Haroon said that the UN has become an exclusive club of five permanent members having veto power. He said that inclusion of some new individual countries would be actually an increase of a few more countries in this 'exclusive club'. "This representation would be inequitable, non-representative and non-transparent," he added. Some 15 years back, the proposal to include new permanent members was launched, but did not materialise due to various reasons, and now once again this idea is being discussed again.
Haroon said that the emergence of G8 and its transforming into G20 was actually to undermine G77, a forum created by the developing countries to discuss their economic issues. He also discussed the history of relationship between Pakistan and the United States. He said that despite close relations with the US, Pakistan faced sanctions during 1965 war, and non-arrival of the 7th fleet during 1971 war generated trust deficit.
He said that Pakistan would never abandon the Kashmiris, and Pakistan would take decisions in accordance with the aspirations of the people of Kashmir. He said that Kashmir is not only a territorial dispute but with it is connected Pakistan's water need. He said that the world community had realised that the uprising against Indian brutality was indigenous and not induced by Pakistan. On a question, he said that the UN had completed report on the death of Benazir Bhutto, which had been handed over to the government of Pakistan. He said that his contract of the job as permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN has been extended.
