A suspected Muslim militant was arrested after a shootout in a New Delhi park, police said Monday. The suspect, identified as Abdullah Inquilabi and believed to be a Pakistani national, was taken into custody by police Sunday night in Deer Park in the southern part of the Indian capital. "The militant alighted from a bus but ran inside the park after he spotted the police chasing him," a police official said.
"He was arrested after a brief exchange of fire." Inquilabi is a self-styled divisional commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen militant group in India-administered Kashmir, police said. During questioning, Inquilabi said he had arrived in New Delhi last week and was trying to find a hideout because the Kashmir police were searching for him. He had been living in Kashmir for 10 years and was suspected of being involved in militant operations that included collecting funds for Hizbul Mujahideen.
