USAID/FAO organised three livestock Mandis in four districts of Balochistan as Eid-ul-Azha is the prime time to promote and bring about positive changes in the livestock sector in the region. According to statement issued by the FAO on Monday, the three such Mandis were organised by the Livestock department under the auspices of USAID/FAO in different districts including, Zhob, Loralai, Killa Saifullah and Mastung.
Traders and sellers brought a large number of animals to the market in these districts. Organisation of these Mandis helped small and marginalised farmers to have an access in their own districts at their doorstep.
Event organised in district Zhob was inaugurated by FAO representatives, giving an introduction of the livestock Mandi, and mentioned that such steps were being taken on behalf of FAO to encourage farmers of the province and facilitate them with medicines and vaccines for animals in the Mandis.
According to the official of the district Livestock department, about 8,050 animals were brought on the first day, while 8,180 animals were brought on the second day by 30 farmers of FAO communities, 450 other sellers, traders and 630 buyers. The number of animals was more than twice of the previous market as there were 3,500 animals reported in livestock Mandi, held last year.
In Loralai, Livestock Eid Mandi was also held by the FAO/USAID with the help of Livestock department. The Mandi was in full swing as the number of animals increased to 8,743. In District Killa Saifullah, Eid Livestock Mandi was also organised where a large number of animals were purchased and were facilitated with medicines. Since Livestock is the main source of income, an estimate of 20,000 animals were bought and sold.
