The taxi and rickshaw drivers overcharged people in the name of Edi during Eidul Azha holidays, as public transport remained thin during the holidays. Till Saturday, the taxi and rickshaws drivers charged people substantially high as compared to the normal fares.
The rickshaw drivers were charging over Rs 70 to Rs 150 on various routes, while taxi drivers were charging fares ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 250 depending on the routes during the holidays. A commuter, Waqas who go to Clifton from Lines Area every week, told Business Recorder that the taxi and rickshaw drivers increased fares enormously during the holidays in the name of Eidi.
Waqas said that the taxi and rickshaw drivers exploited the situation as public transport was thin during the holidays. The rickshaw driver charged Rs 220 from me for going to Clifton from Lines Area during the Eid days. However, the normal fare of the route is between Rs 110 to Rs 130 depending on the bargaining skills of the commuters. On the other hand, the taxi and rickshaw drivers said that they charged commuters nominal high fares, arguing that they had to spend extra on their children and family on Eid.
