Promotion of police officers: SC summons IGP Punjab over non-implementation of court's orders

Showing anger over non-implementation of court's directives regarding police officers' promotion, Supreme Court on Tuesday summoned Inspector General Police (IGP) Punjab to explain why its orders were not implemented yet.
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Javed Iqbal asked Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Police, Punjab as to why the police high-ups failed to submit report regarding promotions of the officers and did not bother to implement court's previous directives.
Earlier, while hearing a sou moto case on October 28, the court had directed the authorities concerned to furnish a comprehensive report regarding all the police officers individually, for alleged favouritism and nepotism in promotion of police officers in Punjab. The court also directed IGP Punjab to file brief reply in the court as to why some police officers were demoted from their ranks.
Zulfikar Hussain Naqvi, a counsel for police officers, stated that using his discretionary powers, the IGP promoted some 700 police officers but had to demote five traffic officers of SP to DSP rank to accommodate some blue-eyed officers. He maintained that it was violation of rules as the senior officers were left and juniors were promoted. Justice Javed Iqbal remarked that why the competent authority did not follow relevant rules and regulations in promotion of police officers. The hearing was adjourned for a week.
