The Director-General, Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR), Major General Athar Abbas, has said that Pakistan Army has always demonstrated the policy of supporting the political process within the confines of Constitution of Pakistan.
Responding to questions of media persons regarding the whistleblowers WikiLeaks disclosure attributed to Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, he said that Pak Army is committed to supporting the political process within the constitutional framework of the country.
In respect of national leadership, DG ISPR said that General Kayani holds all national leaders including PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif in high esteem. The recent tranche of memos, obtained by whistleblower site WikiLeaks had shown that General Kayani informed the US ambassador during a March 2009 meeting that he "might, however reluctantly," pressurise Zardari to resign. According to a cable, Kayani was quoted as saying that he might support Asfandyar Wali Khan, chief of Awami National Party (ANP), as the new president but not Nawaz Sharif.
In another cable of WikiLeaks, US vice president Joe Biden recounted Britain's the then prime minister Gordon Brown's conversation with Zardari last year. Zardari told him that Kayani and the Inter-Services Intelligence agency "will take me out," according to the cable. The cables also showed that Zardari had made extensive preparations in case he was killed.
