Children working as domestic servants: Ministry to provide non-formal educational facilities

Under Basic Education Enabling Programme (BEEP), Ministry of Social Welfare and Special Education has decided to set up ten centers to provide non-formal educational facilities to the children working as domestic servants in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
The BEEP will target 1000 children in the twin cities through skill development, a Ministry spokesman said here on Tuesday. He said that in first phase ten centers would be set up five each in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, which would help mainstream the targeted children in the formal education system and alternative non-exploitative livelihoods.
Under the project, launched in collaboration with a Non Government Organisation Idara Taleem-o-Agahi, linkages among Pakistan Bait-ul-Maal, Child Protection and Welfare Bureau (Punjab) and Social Services Medical Projects of the Ministry of Social Welfare and Special Education would be built. Under the programme, a provision of monthly stipend of Rs 250 has also been granted to the targeted children, besides providing recreational facilities to them. It is worth mentioning here that currently eight centers are working in the twin cities in which 763 students have been enrolled.
