Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) was selected as the largest corporate giver in the category of total volume of donations for 2008 as well as 2009 at the Pakistan Corporate Philanthropy (PCP) Awards held in Karachi on December 6. The company bagged the award for the fifth and sixth consecutive year in the same category.
MD and CEO Khalid Rahman received the awards from Federal Minister for Finance, Revenue, Economic Affairs and Statistics Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh. The event, hosted by PCP, was attended by leading businessmen, representatives of multinational companies, government and civil society representatives, donors and media.
In his inaugural address, Chairman PCP Dr Shamsh Kassim Lakha highlighted the organisation's growing role in "professionalising the process of grant making" and redefining philanthropy not as charity but social asset creation used towards facilitating sustainable development.
Speaking on the occasion, Shaikh complemented the winners for their generosity and stake in the country's development. He urged business leaders to join hands with government and civil society organisations for taking development forward. As the winner for both years, Rahman gave an overview of PPL's extensive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Programme, its focus areas and outreach across the country. "As a responsible corporate citizen, CSR is at the core of our business philosophy and objectives.
Rahman also underscored the company's efforts to ensure sustainability and maximise long-term impact of its CSR initiatives through a participatory process of needs identification, consultation and involvement by all stakeholders followed by close monitoring and inspection to extract lessons learned and further improve ownership and delivery.-PR
