The increase in crime rate is a major source of insecurity and fear today. It is a matter of utmost concern that the crime rate has shown an increase up to fifteen percent in a few months in Lahore. The situation is alarming as it is affecting all spheres of everyday life. The main reasons of increase in criminal activities are linked to political, environmental, economic, social and moral values.
The political link is one of the causes as there are elements among parties who want to let the other down, thus creating a situation of violence and settling scores. Majority of the people carry weapons and do not hesitate to display their use as a sign of power. There is no check on who carries arms, whether they are legal.
The social system itself is responsible for so many problems leading to undesirable acts. It is the strong social and value system, which binds us together. But unfortunately this social system is becoming weak. Stress in life is also increasing with the increase in demands of everyday life. Shortcuts to get things easily also lead to finding illegal ways to get what is required.
We cannot ignore the fact that double standards in our life system are also causing differences and lack of trust. Statements are given for the sake of just verbal commitments. There is no reality and no outcome. This widens the gap between the people. They feel free to do whatever they like as there is no moral barrier to stop them.
Then there are people around us who have enough for a good living. But their greed to have more and more leads to use all means to fulfil their desire. Who suffers at the cost of their wishes is not their concern. This greed has no end.
Mostly in our culture emotional outbursts on just hearing one-sided story leads to committing criminal acts? Tolerance level is decreasing and indifferent attitude is prevailing. Taking revenge on minor issues is becoming a matter of pride and esteem.
To handle situation at this stage is the responsibility of all of us. There should be a campaign at the national level to make each one of us aware of the problem being faced and take responsibility to overcome it. There should be proper planning to let the youth have enough opportunities to play active role in nation building. At home and at the educational institutions, strict check and discipline to be ensured without any compromise on the moral values. Changes need to be made at the administrative and justice level to restore the lost faith of the people. Concrete steps taken today will help to overcome the serious problems of tomorrow.
