Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Ali Mirza has said that maintaining law and order situation in the province was collective responsibility of all the coalition partners. "As the Home Minister I take all the responsibility and we are also deeply concerned but nothing could be done individually," he said while addressing the members of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI).
He said it has been his ambition, desire and determination to bring peace in the most populated city of the country. "Normal crime is since independence when there was no existence of PPP, MQM or the ANP," he pointed out. The Minister said presently at least 60 suspects of target killings with affiliation of various political parties were in custody of the police and investigations were underway. "Alleged target killers were also thoroughly interrogated by the Joint Interrogation Team (JIT)," he told the businessmen.
Referring to the complaints of the KCCI members and its affiliated associations, Mirza said that the government was seeking the help of all the coalition partners to dismantle the forces created hatred among the masses. Regarding the mafia of the extortionists, the Minister was of the view that business community could also be blamed who succumbed to the pressure of the elements involved in the extortion and would not report to the police on time.
He said it was under the leadership of the present government that the business community got rid of the notorious criminal 'Rehman dacoit gang' of Lyari and added that the law and order has considerably improved by 40 percent this year as compared to the crime figures of the previous year.
The Home Minister said that in the most of the cases, internal factors were involved in the law and order situation and suggested the business community to help the government in law and order. He further urged the KCCI members to come forward and assist the provincial government in procurement of vehicles and other necessary equipment as it lacks resources to fulfil all the budgetary demands of the Police Department.
"Due to the recent floods, we have diverted funds for the help of poor people and it is right time for the business community to provide necessary funds," he added. Chairman, Board of Investment (BoI), Saleem H Mandviwala also spoke on the occasion. He said that a summary of establishing economic zones in the country have been sent for consideration and approval of Senate.
Addressing members of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on Monday, he expressed hope that the summery will be approved soon. Regarding power crises in the country, he said hat the government is working on 34 to 50 projects of power generating in the country to overcome persisting power crises.
He further said that work on various small and medium size dames' projects is at different stage of implantation. He said that the government is well aware of business community concerned over prevailing power and gas crises in the country He said that power tariff is not only higher in Pakistan. They are higher in some of the developing countries of the world.
President KCCI, Saeed Shafiq expressed concern over increasing power and gas tariffs and said that since 2008 power tariff register increase by 113 percent which has increased cost of manufacturing many fold. The president said that the country passing through worst ever-economic crises. "We are live in fools paradise if we association any hope of having any fresh local or foreign investment in present circumstances", he added. Referring to offer of utilising sea waves and garbage for power generating, advised that this proposal should be examined and utilised to overcome power shortage.
