At least 35 people were killed in northern India following a collision between a bus and a truck carrying mourners returning from a funeral, police said Sunday. The accident left 30 injured in the Ujhani area near the town of Badaun in Uttar Pradesh state, 200 kilometres south-east of New Delhi on Saturday evening.
"The mini-truck carrying members of the funeral procession was hit by the bus coming from the opposite direction," area police chief G Biltoria said by phone.
"Thirty-four villagers were killed at the scene, while one succumbed to injuries at a hospital later. All the victims were men."
He said the death toll could rise, as 12 people were "seriously injured."
India has one of the highest rates for traffic fatalities in the world. Government data shows approximately 120,000 people are killed in road crashes each year.
