A very economical consumption of electricity, both by the domestic and commercial consumers, has saved sufficient stocks for Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) to deal with canal desilting campaign in the country.
It may be noted that the canal desilting campaign starts from end of December and continues until the end of January. It had been very awesome situation for the Pepco officials during last two years when consumers were crying for electricity amidst closed Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
The officials believe that the energy conservation campaign by Pepco has played due role in motivating the consumers in efficient use of electricity over the year. However, the consumer circles take it otherwise suggesting that failure of the government in overcoming the power crisis has left them with no option but to adopt cautious approach on power utilisation. They said any independent survey would be enough to suggest that per capita consumption of power has reduced considerably due to constant energy crisis in the country.
The power shortage, interesting, has been restricted to 3000MW this time until date against crossing 5000MW in previous years. The official sources said clearance of longstanding dues of IPPs, timely supply of fuel to the power plants and availability of about 2500MW power through hydel sources has improved the situation impressively comparing with previous two years.
Meanwhile, the Pepco chief Rasool Khan Mahsood held a meeting at the Wapda House on Friday to deal with canal desilting campaign in the country. He urged the power distribution companies to chalk out load shedding plan and inform the public in advance. He said mosques' loud speakers could be used for the purpose. The meeting also vowed to give priority to the industrial sector for power supply during the canal desilting campaign. The Pepco chief also took strong exception of the customers' complaint cells having failed in catering the public complaints and desired the appointments of competent officials at these centres.
