Lahore High Court, here Friday directing PIA to freeze its union's accounts till further orders, restrained the allegedly bogus cabinet of Peoples Unity of PIA Employees (CBA) and its president Amir Shah from operating.
The court passed these directions in a petition of the union's General Secretary, Muhammad Ashraf Bhulloo, challenging a parallel cabinet of the union allegedly brought by Senator Faisal Raza Abdi working as political in-charge of the airline's affairs.
The petitioner, through his counsel MA Ghani Chaudhry, submitted that bogus office bearers of the union, backed by senator Abdi, are attempting to oust the duly elected officer bearers of the union from the offices in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad and other cities.
Elaborating, he said PIA union elections are held after every three years and his union cabinet, headed by President Kamran Chaudhry, is a genuine one, which still has one-year time after having completed two years in office. However, Senator Abdi did not wait to elect a new cabinet and violated the union's constitution by choosing a cabinet body comprising like-minded people without polls.
He informed that Abdi was appointed as political in-charge of PIA employees by the President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari through a notification issued on August 16, 2010. He alleged that taking advantage of the notification with the connivance of PIA management, the senator hatched conspiracy against CBA union, ousted the duly elected officer bearers of union posted at Karachi Airport and put his own men at the offices of the union by conducting polls.
The petitioner further alleged that the managing director and chairman PIA also helped Abdi in the plan and facilitated him by all means. The MD and PIA chairman, who is the defence minister, attended the meeting and gathering arranged by Abdi at Lahore Airport on November 5, 2010 for holding dummy polls. Siding with Abdi, they announced a new cabinet of CBA union in violation of the constitution and got it approved by the chairman of NIRC on December 30, 2010. The court issued notices to the respondents and directed PIA management, new cabinet president Amir Shah to file a reply on the petition within a week.
