Pakistan witnessed the worst wave of terrorism during 2010, as 9981 people lost their lives in 3420 terror-related incidents, and 989 people were killed in 143 US drone attacks.
Pakistan remained in the grip of terrorism, suicide and drone attacks, as the year 2010 dawned with a horrendous suicide attack in Shah Hassankhel, Lakki Marwat in which 105 people were killed and over 100 injured, whereas the sunset was no different as one person lost his life and five others received serious injuries in a blast in the same district.
During the year, 3420 terror-related attacks were reported that include 2107 terror strikes and suicide attacks, 368 clashes between security forces and terrorists-mostly in FATA, NWFP and Swat, 286 operational attacks by security forces against terrorists, 232 incidents of target killings, 304 tribal and political clashes and 143 US drone attacks, the data collected by Business Recorder revealed.
The Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) commonly known as drones attacked tribal areas of Pakistan 143 times and in these attacks 989 persons were killed and 382 other injured, besides destruction of property in South and North Waziristan.
In January US drones struck 12 times and killed 99 persons, in February the unmanned planes struck 6 times and killed 64 persons, in March 11 strikes left 68 dead, in April 6 attacks left 44, in May 8 drone attacks killed 88 persons, in June 6 attacks killed 56, in July six attacks killed 46 persons, in August six attacks killed 45 persons. In September done attacks gained momentum and in 22 attacks 133 persons were killed, in October 108 persons were killed in 19 attacks, in November 93 persons were killed in 15 attacks and in December 26 done attacks killed 145 persons.
During the year, out of 9981 victims of terrorism 3592 were civilians, 432 were military and para-military personnel, 182 police personnel while 5775 were terrorists. Among 10,225 injured persons during the year 2010, a total of 6505 were civilians, 988 were military and para-military personnel, 298 police personnel while 2434 among dead were terrorists.
In January 314 terror-related attacks were reported including 166 terrorist attacks and six suicide attempts that claimed 757 lives and left 750 persons injured. The security situation of Interior Sindh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Islamabad remained calm and peaceful as no attacks were reported in these areas. FATA was the worst affected area by the militancy where 68 reported terrorist attacks killed 77 people and injured 158 others; while Balochistan was second most affected area where 62 nationalist insurgent/terrorist attacks killed 34 people and injured 84 others.
In February, the security situation remained volatile as out of the total 251 incidents, 163 were terrorist attacks with nine suicide attacks in which 692 people were killed and 912 were injured. The situation in Balochistan, FATA and Khyber Pakhtonkhwa (KP) remained tense while relative calm and peace was reported in Punjab, Sindh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir.
In March security situation remained unstable in KP, FATA, Balochistan and Punjab; while relative calm was witnessed in other areas of the country. Out of the total 325 incidents, 209 were terrorist attacks in which 1002 people were killed and 1075 were injured. Balochistan was the worst affected area and FATA was the second worst-hit area by the militancy.
In April out of the total 310 incidents, 196 were terrorist attacks in which 1020 people were killed and 1062 were injured. The militancy-hit FATA was the worst affected area where 74 attacks claimed lives of 45 people and injured 88 others; while Balochistan was the second most affected areas with 63 attacks that killed 51 people and injured 109 others.
In May, the insurgency in Balochistan took a worst turn when insurgents launched planned attacks against Punjabis and the province remained worst affected due to terror related attacks while KP was the second most affected area where 43 attacks-including a suicide attack- left 42 people dead and 51 others injured. Out of the total 286 incidents, 196 were terrorist attacks in which 1182 people were killed and 995 injured.
In June 284 terror-related incidents were reported in which 925 persons were killed and 772 injured. Balochistan was the worst hit area due to insurgency where 70 reported attacks killed 40 people and injured 81 others. In FATA 51 attacks claimed 35 lives and injured 89 others; while with 28 reported attacks KP was the third worst hit area by the militants where 18 people lost their lives and 34 were wounded. Karachi suffered 14 attacks which left 20 people dead and nine inured while five attacks were reported in Punjab. In Islamabad two attacks killed nine people and injured 26 others.
In July 267 terror related incidents were reported in which 1077 persons were killed and 1079 injured. FATA was the worst affected area where 62 attacks left 181 people dead and 222 injured. Balochistan was the second most volatile area where 54 attacks killed 41 people and injured 58.
As many as 268 terror related incidents were reported during the month of August in which 554 persons were killed and 595 others were injured. Balochistan was the worst affected area where 70 attacks claimed 56 lives and injured 75 people; whereas with 67 terrorist attacks that left 84 people dead and 97 others wounded FATA was the second most volatile area.
In September, 255 terror incidents were reported in which 828 persons were killed and 1058 injured. Balochistan was the worst affected area during the month with 49 terrorist and insurgent attacks in which 92 persons were killed and 238 injured. Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa was the second most volatile area where 45 terrorist attacks left 69 people dead and 185 others wounded. FATA was third worst hit area with 38 attacks claimed 74 lives injuring 63 others.
In October 302 terror-related incidents were reported across the country in which 667 were killed and 643 injured. FATA was the worst affected area where 72 terrorist attacks left 57 people dead and 89 injured. Balochistan remained at the second place with 52 terrorists and nationalist insurgent attacks that claimed 46 lives and injured 42; whereas with 41 terrorist attacks, that left 24 people dead and 45 others wounded, Khyber-Pakhtonkhwa was the third most volatile province.
In November the country witnessed 275 terror-related incidents in which 639 people were killed and 665 injured. FATA was the worst-hit area with 65 terrorist attacks in which 25 persons were killed and 52 injured. Balochistan was the second worst hit area where 48 terrorist attacks left 42 people dead and 18 injured; whereas with 37 terrorist attacks, that killed 126 people and wounded 205 others, Khyber-Pakhtonkhwa was the third most affected area. December also remained tense in FATA, Khyber-Pakhtonkhwa and Balochistan as in 383 terror related incidents 638 persons were killed and 612 others were injured.
