Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan, a senior leader of Pakistan People's Party (PPP), on Monday dispelled the impression that incumbent government was on its last leg, saying that no big change in the political horizon is excepted unless no-confidence motion is moved against the Prime Minister.
Talking to journalists outside Supreme Court, Aitzaz said that as long as no-confidence motion is moved against Prime Minister Gilani in National Assembly - he will enjoy the majority. "I do not see any threat to the present government right the moment", he added.
Mutahidda Qaumi Movement (MQM) - the third largest political party, having 25 seats in National Assembly and Jamiat Ullema-i-Islam (JUI-F) with eight seats, recently quit the coalition government, pushing it into trouble. "The act of parties who parted ways with the present government would not affect the ruling PPP government and the ongoing political crisis would not last for long time", Aitzaz said. "If the Prime Minister is removed, there would be difficulties in electing a new premier," he cautioned.
He said no-confidence motion would not be moved against Prime Minister in the lower house as no member of the parliament wants to dissolve the assembly. There are two ways to remove the Prime Minister, he said, if the president asked the PM to take vote of confidence from the house and second when the members of the parliament passed no-confidence motion against the premier.
But both the ways, he maintained, were not possible right now. However, he said the government could face threat only in the time of budget but at the same time he said the government would be succeeded in passing the budget as well. He said the present political crisis would not last for long time.
