Pakistan, being one of the biggest black tea consumers, has imported 118.008 million kgs of this commodity worth Rs 23.543 billion ($283.656 million) during the year 2010. Kenyan remained the major producer with its share of 58.44 percent in the total tea imports in the country as Pakistan imported 68.968 million kg black tea worth Rs 16.409 billion ($197.704 million) from this East African country during this period.
The share of neighbouring India stood at 16.59 percent of the total trade, as 19.576 million kg black tea worth Rs 2.171 billion ($26.157 million) was imported from this country in 2010. Pakistan usually imports black tea from 22 different countries; however, no import was registered from Nepal, S. Africa, Zimbabwe, P. N. Guinea and UK in 2010.
Rwanda was the third biggest trade partner in black tea imports with its share of 5.46 percent. Pakistan imported 6.439 million kg black tea worth Rs 1.374 billion ($16.558 million) from this country in 2010. The Vietnam's share remained at 3.45 percent with 4.075 million kg worth Rs 478.510 million ($5.765 million), Indonesian share at 3.37 percent with 3.971 million kg worth Rs 727.560 million ($3.971 million) while Uganda's share stood at 3.32 percent with 3.918 million kg worth Rs 655.852 million ($3.918 million) black tea import in 2010.
Only in December 2010, Pakistan imported 11.904 million kg of black tea worth Rs 2.378 billion ($27.690 million) from different countries. The highest import of this commodity was witnessed in July 2010 when Pakistan imported 14.211 million kg black tea worth $29.475 million in this month while the lowest import was seen in October 2010 with total tea import of 7.789 million kg worth $17.184 million.
Pakistan also imported 2.336 million kg green tea worth Rs 235.865 million ($2.841 million) from four different countries in 2010. Vietnam remained the major green tea supplier to Pakistan with its share of 51.57 percent on the total import of this commodity in 2010. Pakistan imported 1.204 million kg green tea worth Rs 122.017 million from Vietnam in 2010.
China was the second largest tea exporter to Pakistan with its share of 44.63 percent of the total trade. As many as 1.042 million kg of green tea worth Rs 91.052 million ($1.097 million) was imported from China in 2010. Bangladesh share stood at 3.37 percent in total green tea import with 78,645 kg worth Rs 21.458 million ($258,538) while Indonesian share was 0.43 percent to 10,000 kg worth Rs 1.336 million ($16,100) in this period.
